Fasnacht Day! Long-time Ephrata residents know this, but here’s a little history on the fasnacht – a fatty homemade doughnut. Sometimes coated in sugar, it was a tradition that Pennsylvania Dutch housewives made them on Fat Tuesday. It was a quick way to eliminate fat such as lard in the house before Lent.
Fastnacht (with a “t”) is a German word meaning “night before the fast.” Recipes abound – some are square, diamond-shaped, or round. Some have holes.
